Reader:
A reader
voices the scripture aloud during the worship service. St. Paul teaches that it
is through
the hearing of God's Word that the Holy Spirit creates faith
(Romans
10:14). God's word is meant not only to be read but also to be
heard. By lending your voice to the Word of God, God's Word
takes
on flesh.
Tips on the Public Reading of Scripture at
Messiah New Hope
Thanks for serving in
this important
ministry! You should know that the public reading of scripture
dates from the earliest days of the church.
Even before the New Testament was written and assembled, the
disciples
of Jesus read from the Hebrew Bible at worship in the Temple and
Synagogues
where they met. Jesus himself was a Jew
who never missed the opportunity to go to Temple where the highlight of
worship
was the reading the Law or the Prophets (The Old Testament). St. Paul teaches that it is through the hearing of God's Word that the Holy
Spirit creates faith (Romans 10:14).
God's word is meant not only to be read but also to be heard. By lending your voice to the Word of
God,
God's Word takes on flesh. In
reading
the Word of God you are not simply running through what the
congregation
can easily read for themselves in the bulletin; you are placing
yourself
in the tradition of Jesus and the Disciples and giving a human voice to
the
Word of God. Do your best!
Thanks,
Pastor Bill

Preparation:
Silent
Preparation: Prepare
by reading the scripture several
times silently. If you have trouble
with certain words look them up or ask the Pastor.
It is even more important, however, that you understand the
literal meaning of the words you are reading.
Questions? Ask! If you would like a guide on
pronouncing words in scriptures, please visit http://netministries.org/BBasics/bbbott.htm
Vocal
Preparation:
In front of a mirror, read the scripture
aloud. Hold the reading in such a
position that you can easily glance down to see the words and easily
glance up
to look at your reflection without moving your head.
In this posture, your voice will project better.
It is impossible to read too slowly!
2)
Presence and appearance:
Wear clothing that will not
detract
from the message you are reading. Even
though we foster a "come as you are" atmosphere in our church, those
involved in worship leadership should dress to convey a sense of
dignity. Place the reading inside of a
Bible,
or read directly from the Bible.
3)
The
Reading:
o
Introduce
and end the readings with these words:
"The first lesson is from
the book of (book being read from)” – do not provide chapter and
verse,
as everyone can read that in their bulletin.
End with "This is the Word of the Lord."
o
"The
Psalm for the day is number (Psalm
number).” Help them find it
in hymnal or bulletin.
o
-Afterwards,
pause briefly before going on to the next reading.
o
"The
second lesson is from the book of (book
being read from)” – do not provide chapter and verse.
End with "This is the Word of the
Lord."
4)
Closing:
Close your bible and then walk
directly toward your seat.
On
Sunday please...
Please
arrive 15 minutes early so that you can check in with the Pastor or
with Worship
Director for any specific instructions on where to stand, how to use
the
microphone, or changes in the order of worship. Pray
for God's blessing and guidance as you carry out this simple
but very important ministry of Scripture Reading. Thank
you!
